RSF agrees to US-mediated talks on Sudan war | Conflict News

The US invites warring sides in Sudan to Switzerland for ceasefire talks.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to participate in ceasefire talks after the US extended an invitation. RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo confirmed their willingness to engage in negotiations. The talks, scheduled for August 14 in Switzerland, will also involve the Sudanese army, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and observed by the African Union, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Nations.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the objective of reaching a nationwide ceasefire, enabling humanitarian access, and establishing a monitoring mechanism. The conflict in Sudan, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in numerous casualties and a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions struggling to access food.

Efforts to end the war have faced challenges, with previous talks yielding temporary truces. The upcoming negotiations aim to build on past discussions and move towards a peaceful resolution. Both sides have been accused of war crimes, emphasizing the importance of ending the violence and restoring civilian governance in Sudan.
