Punjab Speaker Objects to PM Modi Over Medals for Haryana Officers

Chandigarh: Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan expressed his disapproval of the Haryana government recommending gallantry medals for six police officials who prevented farmers from participating in the ‘Delhi Chalo’ programme. The farmers were demanding legal guarantee for minimum support price for crops and were stopped at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points in February. A young farmer was killed, and many police personnel were injured during clashes.

Sandhwan wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, condemning the recommendation for gallantry medals and stating that it undermines democratic values. He emphasized that the farmers were peacefully agitating for their rights, and the actions of the police should not be glorified.

The Speaker urged the prime minister to reconsider the recommendation, highlighting the need to respect the farmers’ struggle and uphold principles of democracy and human rights. He emphasized the importance of honoring bravery while understanding the context of the situation.
