The Philippines is strengthening its defence ties by signing a pact with Singapore to broaden military engagement, including joint exercises for humanitarian emergencies. Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro will sign the agreement with his Singaporean counterpart, details of which are yet to be disclosed. This move comes amidst territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea, prompting the Philippines to forge new security alliances.
In his recent address to Congress, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr reiterated the country’s stance on peaceful resolutions to disputes while seeking security alliances with friendly nations. The Philippines and Japan have also signed a defence pact, allowing forces to conduct joint military exercises, as both nations navigate challenges posed by China.
Additionally, the Philippines is in talks with Canada, New Zealand, and France for similar defence agreements. With the support of treaty allies like Japan and the US, the Philippines is taking concrete steps to bolster its defence posture and ensure regional stability.
