The Irish Secretary of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) expressed disappointment at the new funding model for RTÉ, with public funding set to reach €725 million over the next three years. While the TV licence will remain at €160 per year, it will be supplemented by Exchequer funding. Séamus Dooley of NUJ criticized the delays in addressing the TV licence system’s inefficiencies and expressed concerns about the future of RTÉ.
On the other hand, RTÉ’s Director-General, Kevin Bakhurst, welcomed the funding announcement, highlighting the importance of planning ahead with certainty. However, the Chairman of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland pointed out that the funding increase does not automatically benefit independent radio stations.
John Purcell emphasized the unique challenges faced by commercial radio stations and called for greater consideration by the government and regulatory bodies. He stressed the need for specific support for independent radio in order to address the ongoing crisis in the sector.
