Biden administration selects Gabriel Escobar as new Ambassador to Asunción
The Biden administration has chosen career diplomat Gabriel Escobar as the next Ambassador to Asunción, set to replace Marc Ostfield pending Senate approval. Escobar, a graduate of Columbia University, is fluent in multiple languages including Spanish, Russian, and Portuguese.
Previously serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary in European and Eurasian Affairs, Escobar has held key positions in embassies worldwide. Ostfield’s strained relationship with Paraguay’s ruling National Republican Association could see relief with his departure, as suggested by political analysts in Asunción.
Paraguay faced challenges following the 2022 assassination of Prosecutor Marcelo Pecci, a key ally in US anti-drug efforts. Escobar’s nomination comes with hopes of fostering stronger diplomatic ties with Paraguay and addressing pertinent issues affecting both nations.
