Unknown Source on Sea Floor is Producing ‘Large Amounts’ of Oxygen

Scientists have made a baffling discovery at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean – a significant amount of oxygen is being produced by an unknown source. This finding challenges the conventional belief that photosynthesis is impossible in such dark, deep-sea conditions.
“We have another source of oxygen on the planet, other than photosynthesis,” stated Andrew Sweetman, a co-author and sea-floor ecologist.
The discovery, made by researchers studying the Clarion-Clipperton zone, points towards electrochemical activity from polymetallic nodules made of manganese and iron as the potential source of this oxygen production.
This phenomenon, observed since 2013, could provide insights on the origin of life and impact of deep-sea mining. While these nodules hold promise for green energy transitions, there are concerns about disrupting fragile ecosystems.
