Morocco’s National Dams Facing Water Crisis: A Call to Action
Recent data from the Ministry of Equipment and Water has revealed a concerning drop in water levels in Morocco’s national dams, with a 0.13% decrease in just four days. The current fill rate stands at 29.14%, a significant decline from last year.
While some basins, like Oum Er Rbia, have shown a slight increase in water levels, experts highlight the critical need for action to address the country’s water crisis. With only a handful of basins boasting fill rates above 30%, urgent measures are required to ensure future water security.
Geological researcher Lahcen Rabeh stresses the essential role national dams play in meeting water needs for both the population and economic activities. Government officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirm the government’s commitment to implementing programs for dam maintenance and sustainable management.
