In a recent move to combat cybercrime, Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has successfully removed 63,000 accounts associated with the notorious “Yahoo Boys” scam group. These accounts were part of financial sextortion scams and distributing blackmail scripts, targeting mainly adult men in the United States using fake identities.
Utilizing advanced technical signals and comprehensive investigations, Meta disabled these accounts and a smaller network of 2,500 linked to around 20 individuals. These cybercriminals, operating largely out of Nigeria, specialize in various types of scams.
Meta has also taken steps to prevent these scammers from returning by improving detection capabilities and working closely with law enforcement. The company has removed scam-related resources and provided training sessions for law enforcement agencies worldwide.
To enhance user safety, especially for teens, Meta has implemented stricter messaging settings and safety notices. However, the company is facing a $220 million fine in Nigeria for data protection violations linked to WhatsApp, which it plans to appeal.
Meta’s efforts to combat cybercrime reflect its commitment to protecting users and ensuring compliance with local regulations. These proactive measures highlight the company’s dedication to maintaining a safe online environment for all.
