Limpopo residents targeted by ‘paid to kill’ hitmen scams

Scammers are using new tactics to deceive people, with one recent scheme involving imposters pretending to be Hawks officers in order to extort money from victims. Two businessmen fell victim to this scam by receiving calls from individuals claiming to be investigating their cases, demanding payment to avoid prosecution. Detective Captain Nompumelelo Hadebe warns the public to be cautious of suspicious phone calls and recommends verifying the caller’s identity by contacting the police station they claim to be associated with.

It is essential to ask for the caller’s full name and location before complying with any requests for money. If you suspect you are being targeted by a scam, report it to the nearest police station or contact the SAPS Crime Stop number at 08600-10111. Stay alert and protect yourself from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes.
