Seven Labour MPs Suspended for Voting in Favor of Amendment to Scrap Two-Child Benefit Cap

Seven Labour members of parliament (MPs) were suspended on Tuesday for supporting an opposition amendment aimed at eliminating a two-child benefit cap. Former shadow chancellor John McDonnell was among those MPs who voted for the motion submitted by the Scottish National Party (SNP).

The motion aimed to force the government to abandon the cap policy, which restricts parents from claiming social benefits for more than two children. Although the motion failed, with a majority of 260, the Labour MPs faced disciplinary action.

Nadia Whittome, MP for Nottingham East, criticized the government’s handling of the situation, stating that no MP should have lost their whip for voting against a policy that many in the Labour Party oppose.

The suspended MPs, including Richard Burgon, Ian Byrne, and Rebecca Long-Bailey, will now sit with independent MPs in the House of Commons. They believe that scrapping the cap would lift 330,000 children out of poverty.

Begum, another suspended MP, highlighted the impact of the cap on child poverty, emphasizing the importance of standing up for vulnerable members of society.

Despite the cost to the government, estimated at £3.4 billion a year, these MPs are determined to advocate for the most marginalized and fight against policies that contribute to rising levels of poverty and food insecurity in the UK.
