Russia offers a helping hand to Kyrgyzstan in rehabilitating areas affected by uranium mining and ore processing. President Sadyr Zhaparov recently signed a law ratifying an agreement with Russia to address the repercussions of past mining activities. The initial agreement was signed during the ATOMEXPO-2024 forum in Sochi earlier this year and received approval from the Kyrgyz Parliament in June.
This collaboration aims to ensure the safety of residents near former mining sites and implement measures to prevent emergencies in the area. Russia has committed 2.141 billion rubles to support the rehabilitation of five mining sites. Interestingly, Kyrgyzstan, under Zhaparov’s leadership, has also lifted a moratorium on uranium development, allowing exploration and development of uranium and thorium deposits within its borders.
This partnership signifies a step towards environmental protection and sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan, setting a positive precedent for future cooperative efforts in addressing environmental challenges.
