Shakti Guarantee Scheme: Karnataka Government in Rs 1,400 Crore Debt to State-Run RTCs
The implementation of the ‘Shakti’ guarantee scheme, allowing women to travel for free on board buses, has led to the Karnataka government accumulating dues of Rs 1,400 crore to state-run road transport corporations. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy highlighted the surge in commuters using buses since the scheme’s launch, except for the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation, all other transport agencies are profitable.
Reddy explained that ticket fares have not been increased for years, leading to mounting expenses such as salaries, fuel costs, and maintenance. As a result, some corporations are facing losses. Despite this, revenues have increased after the implementation of the ‘Shakti’ scheme, with the government disbursing Rs 4,453 crore so far and Rs 1,413.47 crore pending. A budget of Rs 5,015 crore has been allocated for the scheme this year, with the government working to address the funding shortfall.
Transport Minister Reddy assured the Chief Minister of resolving the financial issues related to the scheme promptly.
