The Italian research vessel Ievoli Relume has left the maritime area south of Kassos in the southern Aegean, escorted by the Greek Navy gunboat Aittitos, after completing its operations.
The vessel was conducting research for the installation of underwater cables connecting Crete with Cyprus, which led to tensions between Greece and Turkey. Turkey claimed a violation of its continental shelf, prompting both countries to deploy warships in the area.
Following a navigational telex from Greece’s Iraklio Navtex station, the Ievoli Relume concluded its operations ahead of schedule and is now returning to Crete. The Greek frigate Nikiforos Fokas is monitoring the departure of two Turkish ships from the region.
