Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has taken decisive action by shutting down the Islamic Centre Hamburg, including its iconic “Blue Mosque”, for allegedly promoting extremism and serving as a front for the Iranian government. The raids conducted by hundreds of armed state policemen have also targeted related institutions in five states across Germany.
Faeser, in a video address, accused the association of anti-constitutional activities with links to Iran and Hezbollah. The Ministry of the Interior revealed that extensive evidence was seized during raids in November 2023, leading to the ban on the centre in Hamburg and its subsidiaries in other cities.
Despite IZH’s claims of promoting peace and tolerance, the closure provoked a diplomatic response from Iran. The Islamic Centre’s leader, appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader, has been linked to Iranian propaganda and military roles.
Supporters of the ban cite concerns about extremism and antisemitism, while critics question the lack of evidence and legal process. The closure represents a significant step in Germany’s efforts to combat Islamist ideologies while protecting the rights of peaceful practitioners of the faith.
