Recently, security forces in the Sulaimaniyah province of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs by concealing them in books destined for the United Kingdom. The Anti-Drug Directorate of the Kurdistan Region’s Security Agency seized 44 books filled with liquid amphetamine thanks to prior intelligence and thorough surveillance.
A suspect, now detained under Article 26 of the Anti-Drug Law, was arrested as part of the operation. Meanwhile, Iraq is facing a growing drug trafficking crisis, with record Captagon seizures reported by the UNODC last year. Methamphetamine is also increasingly flowing through the country from Afghanistan to Europe.
Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani has urged for greater regional cooperation to combat the drug trade, as Iraq strengthens its anti-drug efforts amidst rising domestic drug use. With pressures from Gulf states, regional governments are stepping up to address the escalating drug problem. Let us all hope for a collective effort to put an end to this harmful trade and usage of drugs.
