German Court Orders Stronger Air Quality Program to Reduce Pollution

A German court recently ruled that the federal government must enhance its National Air Quality Program to meet European targets for reducing air pollution. The Higher Administrative Court of Berlin-Brandenburg sided with the NGO Environmental Action Germany (DUH) in a lawsuit against the government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The court’s decision follows a previous ruling in May that urged the government to improve its climate protection plans. The new ruling mandates greater efforts to reduce ammonia, particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide in the air. Although the government can appeal to the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig, they are required to take action to address air quality concerns.

Germans Favor Domestic Electric Cars Over Foreign Models

In a study by the Handelsblatt Research Institute, it was found that Germans overwhelmingly prefer domestic electric cars over cheaper Chinese models. The survey, conducted for Bearing Point, revealed that German consumers have a strong preference for Volkswagen electric cars, followed by Mercedes and BMW. Chinese brands and Tesla, despite recently opening a factory in Germany, lag behind as the government encourages the adoption of electric vehicles.

Overall, the rulings and consumer preferences highlight the growing importance of environmental protection and sustainable transportation choices in Germany.
