French Alps to Host 2030 Winter Olympics
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally chose the French Alps to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, pending French President Emmanuel Macron’s guarantee of funding and security commitments by October 1.
Macron assured the IOC of the French nation’s full commitment at the session and pledged to prioritize the Olympic Law within the new government’s agenda, similar to the successful delivery of the Paris 2024 Summer Games.
The decision was made ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, with Salt Lake City in Utah announced as the host for the 2034 Winter Olympics during the same session.
France, having hosted three Winter Games previously, would see the 2030 event in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur regions, while Salt Lake City, which previously hosted the 2002 Winter Games, would welcome the 2034 event with 83 out of 89 votes.
The choice of hosts marks a shift in the IOC’s selection process and underscores the continued global interest and commitment to hosting the Olympic Games.
