France has been conditionally selected as the host of the 2030 Winter Games, pending the delivery of key financial guarantees in the coming months, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The French Alps bid had been the frontrunner since June, but due to elections and a caretaker government, they could not provide the necessary state and regional financial assurances on time.
President Emmanuel Macron personally assured the IOC of France’s commitment, promising to prioritize an Olympic Law and ensure all guarantees are in place by the deadlines set by the IOC.
The IOC, while acknowledging the assurances received, has made it clear that the host city contract will not be signed until all guarantees are officially in place.
With an overwhelming 84 out of 88 votes, France’s bid was successful, making it the host of the Winter Games just six years after hosting the Summer Olympics in Paris.
France has previously hosted the Winter Games in Chamonix in 1924, Grenoble in 1968, and Albertville in 1992.
