Fight for Control: A.I., Human Rights in EU Parliament

In December 2023, the European Parliament introduced a groundbreaking draft law focused on safeguarding human rights and democracy in Europe in the face of AI advancements. The legislation aims to prohibit AI systems from manipulating human behavior to preserve free will and combat concerns surrounding technological manipulation in critical decision-making processes. With fears of AI potentially causing physical or psychological harm, 11 human rights organizations are calling for more transparency and protective measures.

The legislation comes at a crucial time when the misuse of AI technology to control citizens’ minds poses a significant threat to democracy. Dolors Montserrat, head of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee, highlighted the risks associated with neurotechnologies supported by AI, emphasizing the urgent need for regulations. Human rights groups are advocating for clear laws that explicitly ban any government use of AI to remotely control neural activity and address AI’s impact on inequality and human rights.

The debate over AI’s influence on society, democracy, and individual freedoms underscores the importance of robust regulations to prevent abuse and ensure technology serves humanity. As the European Parliament deliberates on this crucial issue, the outcome will shape the future relationship between AI and society in Europe.
