FG implements reinforced concrete tech on East-West Road in 80 characters

The Federal Government has announced plans to use reinforced concrete technology on the East-West road in the South-south region of Nigeria to address years of infrastructural neglect and pavement failures on the highway.

This decision follows threats of protests from the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People and former agitators in the Niger Delta due to the unfinished state of the road, leading to accidents and loss of lives.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, emphasized the commitment to ensuring the road segments do not fail again. He commended contractors for their work on the relief culverts and assured a permanent solution, raising the road above flood levels with a 12-inch reinforced concrete overlay.

The project is expected to be completed by December, with a focus on local contractor involvement and collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission to contain floods.

This move by the government is a step towards addressing infrastructure deficits in the region and ensuring safer travel for road users.
