Ezekwesili calls for investigation as Kyari denies owning foreign plant

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has demanded an independent audit to investigate why the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited only invested 7.2 per cent in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery instead of the planned 20 per cent. The NNPC’s Group CEO, Mele Kyari, denied owning a blending plant outside Nigeria, amidst controversies surrounding the Dangote refinery.

Ezekwesili emphasized the need for transparency and public accountability in the Dangote refinery-NNPC transaction. She urged President Bola Tinubu to utilize the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) for an independent audit to reveal the true state of affairs. The NNPC’s decision not to further invest in the refinery was confirmed, with Dangote clarifying that NNPC only owns 7.2 per cent, not 20 per cent.

Kyari refuted claims of NNPC officials owning blending plants in Malta, asserting that he does not operate any business outside Nigeria. He warned of sanctions for any NNPC employee involved in such activities. The ongoing dispute highlights the need for transparency and integrity in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
