EU countries demand reevaluating ties with Syria – Yemen Press Agency

Eight European Union countries are calling for a review of the EU’s ties with Syria due to the increasing number of refugees fleeing the country, as reported by the German news agency “DPA”. The group of countries, including Italy, Austria, and Greece, is urging the EU to adopt a more proactive approach towards Syria in light of current tensions in the region.

The countries are proposing the appointment of a special envoy to engage with various Syrian parties and a reassessment of sanctions to target only government officials rather than the private sector. The EU cut ties with Syria in 2011 amid escalating violence during the civil war and has maintained a stance of no normalization with the Assad regime without his participation in a UN-backed political process to end the conflict.

This call for review comes as the humanitarian crisis in Syria continues to worsen, with neighboring countries bearing the brunt of the refugee influx and escalating tensions in the region.
