Former government minister and former Fianna Fáil deputy leader Éamon Ó Cuiv has announced that he will not be standing in the next general election. Representing Galway West since 1992, Mr Ó Cuiv has held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs from 2002 to 2010, and Minister for Social Protection from 2010 to 2011. He also served as the Fianna Fáil deputy leader from 2011 to 2012.
In a statement, Mr Ó Cuiv expressed his decision, stating, “After deep consideration, I have decided not to seek a nomination to stand in the next general election. In the meantime, I will continue to work as usual. I would like to thank everybody who supports me in my work.”
Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin praised Mr Ó Cuiv, calling him an “outstanding parliamentarian and Minister.” He commended Mr Ó Cuiv’s dedication to peace and reconciliation on the island of Ireland and his innovative work in promoting the Irish Language during his time as Minister for the Gaeltacht and Rural Affairs.
