A 42-year-old cold case of a teenage girl’s rape and murder has been solved in Northern California, leading to the arrest of James Unick, 62. Using advanced DNA technology, Unick, from Willows, was identified as the suspect and booked on multiple charges.
The victim, Sara Ann Geer, 13, was found murdered in Cloverdale in 1982. New DNA technology allowed for the identification of a male DNA profile from the evidence, leading to the arrest of Unick.
This case demonstrates the evolving use of DNA genealogy in solving cold cases, similar to other high-profile cases like the “Golden State Killer.” The arrest has brought closure to the Geer family and reaffirmed the commitment to justice and safety in Cloverdale.
Mayor Todd Lands expressed solidarity with the Geer family and praised the efforts of law enforcement in bringing justice after years of perseverance.
