Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández was invited to be a foreign observer at Venezuela’s elections on July 28 but declined the offer after the Venezuelan government expressed concerns about his impartiality. Fernández had mentioned in an interview that Maduro would have to step down if defeated, which sparked discomfort in Caracas.
The Caracas government asked Fernández not to travel, leading to his decision not to participate in the electoral observation. Despite his disappointment, Fernández emphasized the importance of democracy and wished Venezuela a bright future. Meanwhile, the National Electoral Council in Venezuela raised allegations of a media campaign against Maduro’s regime.
