Azaz Central Prison Experiencing Unrest

A recent incident at the central prison in Azaz highlighted the ongoing challenges within the Syrian Interim Government’s prison system. A reported attempted armed rebellion among inmates prompted intervention from the Levant Front faction to restore order. Although the situation was quickly controlled, similar disturbances have been reported in other prisons across northern and eastern Aleppo provinces.

The director of the Syrian Center for Justice and Accountability, Mohamed al-Abd al-Allah, denounced the systemic torture practices in the National Army factions’ prisons and warned of potential international sanctions. Operational irregularities and human rights violations within these facilities have drawn criticism from various organizations.

The incidents underscore the challenges of maintaining order in Syria’s complex prison system, with concerns raised about misconduct, torture, and violations of civilian rights. The need for accountability and reform within the prison system remains a pressing issue for the opposition forces.
