Climate protesters were arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport as part of a coordinated action across Europe, with activists detained for attempting to disrupt operations. Despite the arrests, Heathrow confirmed that its operations were not affected by the protest.
Just Stop Oil, the pressure group behind the protests, is calling for an end to oil and gas extraction and use, demanding that the UK halt new licensing and work towards a fossil fuel treaty with other countries to phase out extraction by 2030. The group’s actions have also extended to airports in Germany, Norway, Spain, and Finland.
Heathrow had obtained a court injunction to prevent protesters from entering the airport grounds, warning of planned disruptive action. Similar injunctions were issued for three other UK airports as Just Stop Oil threatened further protests unless their demands were met.
The protests are part of the A22 Network of activist groups advocating for non-violent protest to raise awareness about the aviation industry’s impact on carbon emissions. With global aviation responsible for around 2.5% of global carbon emissions, activists are pushing for urgent action to decarbonize the industry.
