Whale environmentalist and crew arrested in Greenland on Japanese warrant
The Greenland police reported it had arrested environmental activist Paul Watson when his ship docked in Nuuk under an international warrant issued by Japan. Watson, known for his direct action tactics against whaling ships, was on a mission with his crew to intercept a new Japanese whaling ship in the North Pacific.
Watson’s organization, the Captain Paul Watson Foundation, stated that his arrest was related to previous anti-whaling activities in the Antarctic. Despite reports that the Interpol Red Notice had been withdrawn, Watson’s arrest was a surprise. Japan’s government has not commented on the incident yet.
The Japanese whaling “mother-ship,” Kangei Maru, is responsible for slaughtering whales caught by smaller vessels and has been pursued by activists for its controversial hunting practices.
