Violence against women and girls in the UK has reached epidemic levels, with over 1 million such incidents reported in a year, accounting for 20% of all crime from 2022 to 2023.
Authorities in the United Kingdom are sounding the alarm on the escalating levels of violent crime against women and girls, labeling it as an “epidemic.” A recent report released by the National Police Chiefs’ Council and the College of Policing revealed shocking statistics, with one in six murders in England and Wales linked to domestic abuse during the period.
The report highlighted that at least one in every 12 women falls victim to gender-based violent crimes annually, including rape, stalking, harassment, and online abuse. Despite these alarming numbers, many cases go unreported, further exacerbating the issue.
‘National emergency’
The Deputy Chief Constable, Maggie Blyth, described the data as “staggering,” emphasizing the urgent need for societal change to combat violence against women and girls. The report indicated a 37% increase in violent crimes targeting women since 2018, with child sexual abuse and exploitation skyrocketing by 435% between 2013 and 2022.
Blyth declared, “Violence against women and girls is a national emergency,” urging for stronger government support to tackle the overwhelming issue. While law enforcement efforts have intensified, more comprehensive measures are needed to address the root causes and bring perpetrators to justice.
