The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, recently visited Haiti to announce an additional $60 million in humanitarian aid. During her day-long trip, she met with the country’s transitional presidential council and Prime Minister Garry Conille to discuss the importance of free and fair elections and government accountability.
The funds provided by the USAID will be used for security assets and humanitarian assistance, addressing the essential needs of food, water, and shelter in Haiti. This aid comes on top of the $105 million the US had already committed to the country.
Thomas-Greenfield’s visit comes at a critical time when Kenya is deploying police officers to help combat rising insecurity in Haiti. The country has been plagued by gang violence, with recent attacks prompting emergency measures from the Haitian government.
The UN-approved Kenya-led security mission, with support from various countries, aims to restore stability in Haiti. The United States is also contributing funding and logistical support to the mission, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing Haiti’s challenges.
