US Secret Service director acknowledges failure in protecting Trump

The U.S. Secret Service director, Kimberly Cheatle, admitted to the agency’s failure in protecting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Cheatle, facing calls to resign, appeared before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability and acknowledged the lapse in security.

Despite calls for her resignation, Cheatle maintained that she is the right person to lead the Secret Service and took full responsibility for any security lapses. The bipartisan committee issued a letter urging Cheatle to step down, highlighting the need for agencies that transcend politics and garner confidence across party lines.

The assassination attempt, described as the most significant operational failure in decades, raised questions about security protocols and responses. Cheatle vowed to investigate and prevent a repeat of such incidents, emphasizing the Secret Service’s mission to protect national leaders.
