Beijing and Moscow Slam US Criticism of Arctic Cooperation

Beijing and Moscow have pushed back against the United States’ accusations that their collaboration in the Arctic could jeopardize regional stability. In response to a recent strategy report from the US Department of Defense, both nations defended their actions in the Arctic, citing the impact of geopolitical shifts on the region’s strategic importance.

The report highlighted Russia’s increased military presence in the Arctic, as well as China’s investments in polar exploration to establish a “Polar Silk Road.” The Pentagon noted concerns over the growing alignment between China and Russia in the region, prompting continued monitoring of their cooperation.

Misplaced and confrontational

Addressing the criticism, Moscow emphasized that its Arctic cooperation with China is not targeted at any specific country and aims to enhance stability in the region. Similarly, Beijing defended its activities as promoting win-win cooperation and sustainable development.

Countering Russia and China

The Pentagon report underscored China’s efforts to enhance its influence in the Arctic and called for increased US investments in technology to keep pace with China and Russia. Additionally, the US, Canada, and Finland plan to collaborate on building icebreaker ships to bolster Western capabilities and counter the influence of Russia and China in the polar regions.
