Russian lawmakers want to penalize soldiers using smartphones in Ukraine battlefields.

Russia’s lower house of parliament has proposed a new law to punish soldiers caught using smartphones while fighting in Ukraine, as concerns grow about revealing troops’ locations on the battlefield. According to the proposal, soldiers using internet-connected cell phones that can identify Russian troops or locations will face penalties up to 10 days of arrest for a first offense and up to 15 days for multiple offenses. The use of other electronic devices for recording and transmitting data will also be prohibited.

This initiative comes amidst reports that both Russian and Ukrainian militaries have used enemy cell phones to track coordinates and carry out attacks. The United States and its intelligence allies have warned about Russian military hackers targeting Ukrainian soldiers’ mobile devices.

While the Kremlin acknowledges the risks, Russian military bloggers criticize the new law as lacking understanding of modern warfare. Some suggest creating controlled gadgets that do not compromise sensitive information. The draft law must pass through the Duma before reaching the Federation Council.
