Reports suggest that officials from the PTI party, which the government intends to disband, have been detained following a raid on their offices.
Security forces recently conducted a raid on the offices of the Pakistan Tehreek e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The raid came in the wake of the government’s announcement to disband the PTI, the largest opposition movement in Pakistan.
Following the raid, Acting party Chairman Gohar Khan and Information Secretary Rauf Hasan were reportedly detained. While Gohar Khan was released, Hasan remains in police custody. Hasan had previously voiced concerns about party members disappearing without a trace.
The crackdown on PTI comes after a series of court rulings in its favor that threaten Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government. These rulings include awarding additional seats in parliament to PTI and overturning Imran Khan’s convictions.
The government’s decision to ban PTI and file treason charges against Imran Khan has drawn criticism from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and UN experts, who question the legality and motives behind these actions.
