Malaysia evacuates 123 citizens & students from Bangladesh amid violent protests

Malaysia evacuated 123 citizens from Bangladesh in response to violent unrest that has claimed dozens of lives. Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution welcomed the evacuees, including 80 students, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Over 50 Malaysians chose to stay in Bangladesh for work or study.

Violent protests erupted in Bangladesh due to a controversial government job allocation system, resulting in clashes between police and student protesters. The protests subsided after Bangladesh’s top court reduced the job quota. However, these protests have posed a significant challenge to the government since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s re-election in January.

Despite the internet blackout and communication issues, Malaysia facilitated the safe return of its citizens. Cassandra David, a student at Dhaka Medical College, shared her experience and expressed gratitude for the support and information provided by Malaysian authorities during the unrest.
