Major raid in Mpumalanga seizes homes, cars and jewellery in Covid PPE investigation

Law enforcement agencies have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against corruption, seizing assets and properties worth R52.6m across four provinces. The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) have targeted 22 individuals and entities involved in an alleged corruption network within the Mpumalanga department of public works.

The Mbombela high court granted a preservation order allowing the AFU, SIU, and Hawks to confiscate assets connected to corrupt activities related to personal protective equipment (PPE) tenders. The operation involved raids on 34 locations, resulting in the seizure of properties, vehicles, and other assets.

Allegations of multi-million rand PPE tenders being awarded to non-compliant suppliers in exchange for kickbacks have led to pending charges of corruption, fraud, and money laundering. This crackdown showcases a firm stance against corruption in high-profile government contracts.
