Indian authorities have issued an alert after a 14-year-old boy died from infection by the deadly Nipah virus in Kerala. Nipah, a zoonotic virus, can cause a lethal brain-swelling fever. There is no vaccine or cure available for Nipah, making it a priority pathogen classified by the World Health Organization. The virus, first identified 25 years ago, has caused outbreaks in several countries.
The victim’s funeral will follow international protocol for virus outbreaks. The Kerala government has taken measures to isolate potential cases and conduct testing. Precautions include wearing masks and avoiding hospitals in the affected area. Authorities have also advised against consuming fruits eaten by animals.
