This represents a clear blow to the credibility of Israel’s key claims about its “territorial integrity” and its “rights” under international law.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an advisory opinion on Israel’s policies in the occupied Palestinian territory, finding Israel guilty on all accounts. The verdict has potential for actions against Israel by other states.
The ruling highlighted violations such as illegal settlements, annexation of land, and exploitation of resources, all deemed illegal under international law. The court reaffirmed its 2004 advisory opinion condemning Israel’s settlement expansion.
The advisory opinion, requested by the UN, called for restitution and evacuation of settlers from the occupied territories. It also emphasized the obligation of all states to address Israel’s violations.
Although Israel rejects the opinion, it undermines their claims to territorial integrity. The ICJ’s ruling may lead to further legal action against Israeli leaders.
