France’s left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire alliance has chosen Lucie Castets, the finance director for Paris City Hall, as their nominee for prime minister. This decision came shortly before President Emmanuel Macron’s TV appearance on Tuesday, July 23. Castets, a relatively unknown figure, is an economist and alumna of the prestigious Ecole Nationale d’Administration.
Following a two-week deliberation among the alliance’s four parties, La France Insoumise, the Socialists, the Greens, and Communists, Castets was selected for her role in advocating for public services and opposing raising the retirement age to 64, a point of contention in France in 2023. The parties express their full support for her future leadership.
