EU Strips Hungary of Hosting Foreign Ministers Meeting Over Russia Overtures
In a bold move, the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has decided to strip Hungary of its role as host of the EU foreign ministers meeting due to be held in late August. This decision comes after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s controversial visits to Moscow and Beijing, which were made without EU backing and were deemed as “pro-war” by his government.
Borrell stated that the meeting will now take place in Brussels in a symbolic gesture to express the EU’s disapproval of Hungary’s actions. Despite this change, Hungary will still be allowed to attend the informal meeting.
Orban’s visits to Russia and China have garnered criticism from many EU countries who believe Hungary’s close ties with Moscow are undermining the EU’s efforts to isolate Russia due to the conflict in Ukraine. Orban’s actions have raised concerns about his alignment with Russia on the issue, particularly after discussing peace negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
