Ethiopian landslides claim 157 lives, official reports

Tragedy struck in southern Ethiopia as the death toll from two devastating landslides has risen to 157, with fears that the number could continue to climb. The first landslide buried residents in Gofa zone in the Southern Ethiopia regional state, followed by a second one that engulfed those who had rushed to help.

Markos Melese, head of the National Disaster Response agency in Gofa Zone, described the area as challenging and mentioned that the search for bodies is ongoing. Officials have already recovered 157 bodies from two villages, but they anticipate that the number will increase as search efforts continue.

Initially, at least 50 deaths were reported, with children and police officers among the victims. The situation remains dire as rescue teams work tirelessly to recover more bodies and provide support to the affected communities.
