British defense sec affirms ‘NATO first’ approach, strong backing for Ukraine

LONDON – British Defense Secretary John Healey reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to a “NATO first” defense strategy during his speech at the RUSI Land Warfare Conference 2024. He emphasized the importance of international cooperation, especially in the face of the conflict in Ukraine and Russia’s aggression.

Healey highlighted the critical situation in Ukraine, citing the ongoing threat posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He commended the courage of the Ukrainian military and civilians and announced an acceleration of aid delivery to Ukraine.

He also confirmed a commitment of £3 billion annually to Ukraine and signed a Defense Industrial Support Treaty with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Additionally, Healey announced the launch of a new Defense Review, led by former NATO Secretary General George Robertson, to assess current threats and capabilities.

Looking ahead, Healey revealed the UK’s leadership of NATO’s Special Operations Task Force from 2026, signaling big challenges and opportunities for the Army as part of a stronger alliance. The Defense Review aims to involve active participation and innovative ideas from the Army.
