Tragedy struck southern Ethiopia as two landslides claimed the lives of at least 50 people. Heavy rain triggered the landslides, with the second one occurring while locals, including police, were attempting to rescue those affected by the initial disaster.
Gofa district government spokesperson, Kassahun Abayneh, confirmed the devastating events, stating that women, children, and local police were among the casualties. The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation shared photos on Facebook showing rescue efforts on the barren hillside.
Meskir Mitku, the district general administrator of Gofa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. The community came together to aid those in need, only to face another tragic landslide.
The incident serves as a grim reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preparedness in vulnerable areas. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families in this difficult time.
