Watch Out: 4 Monsoon Viral Infections – Symptoms, Precautions & Treatment

Monsoon brings relief from the heat but also increases the risk of viral diseases like Zika, Nipah, Chandipura, and Covid-19. Cases have been reported across the country, with some fatalities. Let’s explore the symptoms and treatments for these infections.

Zika

Zika virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes primarily in tropical regions. Maharashtra has reported cases, with Pune being most affected. Symptoms include fever, rash, and joint pain. Prevention involves wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent.

Zika can result in pregnancy complications and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Avoiding mosquito bites and taking precautions are essential.

Nipah

Nipah affects animals and can be transmitted to humans, causing fever and brain-swelling. Recent cases in Kerala highlight the severity of the virus. Prevention includes avoiding contact with infected animals and maintaining personal hygiene.

Supportive care is the main treatment for Nipah infection as there is no specific cure or vaccine available.

Chandipura

Chandipura virus affects children and spreads through sandflies and mosquitoes. Symptoms include fever, seizures, and altered sensorium. Controlling vectors and maintaining hygiene are crucial for prevention.

Covid-19

The KP.2 variant has led to a surge in Covid-19 cases, affecting prominent individuals. Precautions like wearing masks and social distancing are still essential. Vaccination and proper hygiene practices can help prevent the spread of the virus.
