UK rolls out training initiative to lessen dependency on migration

UK PM Keir Starmer Launches Skills England to Reduce Reliance on Overseas Workers

Prime Minister Keir Starmer unveiled Skills England, a new skills training organization, aiming to reduce the UK’s dependence on overseas workers for economic growth. Starmer emphasized the importance of transforming the relationship between business and education to enhance productivity.

In a speech at the Farnborough International Airshow, Starmer acknowledged the lack of skills training for young people, leading to an overreliance on migration in the economy. He emphasized the need to create a coherent skill system to provide opportunities for all individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.

Skills England will collaborate with the Migration Advisory Committee to identify and bridge skill gaps in the workforce. The initiative will involve government entities, businesses, training providers, and unions to strategically oversee skill development for individuals over 16 years old.

Starmer stressed the need to reduce migration levels by equipping the local workforce with the necessary skills. The government is committed to decreasing long-term reliance on overseas workers through comprehensive skill development programs.
