President Bola Tinubu, Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, provided a detailed overview of the progress and challenges faced by the West African economic bloc in the past year at the Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union in Ghana.
Highlighting ECOWAS achievements, Tinubu mentioned the activation of a Standby Force to combat terrorism, support for electoral processes in member states, and the signing of an Agreement for National Unity in Sierra Leone.
He also emphasized efforts in economic integration, humanitarian aid, education, health, and energy development within the region. Tinubu mentioned initiatives like the Regional Electricity Access Project and support for climate-smart agriculture.
Despite progress, challenges such as member states withdrawing, terrorism, food insecurity, and misinformation were recognized. ECOWAS aims to maintain unity and address these issues through dialogue and cooperation.
The meeting also included discussions on regional integration with other African communities and mechanisms, emphasizing collaboration and shared goals.
President Tinubu’s bilateral meeting with President Guelleh of Djibouti highlighted Nigeria’s leadership role in the region and the importance of addressing common challenges together.
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting serves as a crucial platform for aligning the AU and RECs to advance the continental integration agenda, focusing on education this year.
