Shujaiya in Gaza left in ruins after Israeli attack

Shujaiya, a neighborhood in Gaza City, has been left in ruins after being heavily targeted by Israeli forces during the recent military offensive. Residents returning to the area found only rubble, destroyed belongings, and decomposed bodies. Many have been forced to relocate to the west of Gaza City due to the lack of livable space in Shujaiya.

The intense two-week military operation resulted in the destruction of residential blocks, streets being bulldozed, and infrastructure being severely damaged. Residents described the devastation of seeing their neighbors’ belongings scattered in the rubble, with some even finding evidence of possible executions.

The heartbreaking stories of residents like Mohammed Hajjaj and Ahmed Halas highlight the immense loss and destruction that Shujaiya has suffered. With an estimated 70 percent of the buildings destroyed, the once densely-populated neighborhood now lies in ruins.

Known for its history of resistance against Israel, Shujaiya has been a key battleground in previous conflicts. The neighborhood’s strategic position to the east of Gaza City has made it a target for Israeli forces.

Despite the devastation, the spirit of resilience among the residents of Shujaiya remains strong as they try to rebuild their lives in the wake of the destruction.
