Drug Crimes on the Rise in North Korea: An Alarming Report
The North Hamgyong Province branch of North Korea’s national police agency recently reported a 40% surge in drug crimes compared to last year, with 900 cases exposed in Chongjin alone. The report highlighted the widespread drug use among various segments of society, including children and wealthy individuals.
In response, the provincial party committee issued a stern warning, labeling drug crimes as an “enemy act” aimed at corrupting society. The committee ordered a two-month crackdown on drugs, with the possibility of severe punishments, including the death penalty, for those caught smuggling drugs to China.
The Ministry of Social Security in North Hamgyong Province announced plans to increase public awareness about drug crimes and strengthen the reporting system. Meanwhile, residents are cautious to avoid repercussions during the authorities’ campaign against drug crimes.
