The Government of Kosovo has expressed disappointment with the European Union’s decision to cancel visas for Serbs living in Kosovo. Klisman Kadiu, adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister Besnik Bislimi, stated that the Serbian passports issued by Serbia are still considered illegal by Kosovo. This decision has been deemed as a violation of Kosovo’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Kadiu emphasized that every citizen in Kosovo, regardless of their community, has the right to free movement without visas through the passport of the Republic of Kosovo. He also criticized the haste in decision-making and highlighted the negative impact on previous efforts to integrate the Serbian community in Kosovo.
The European Council recently decided to abolish the visa regime for Serbian citizens of Kosovo holding Serbian passports, stating that this change aims to apply the same visa rules to the entire Western Balkans region. This decision comes after the European Parliament’s Commission for Civil Liberties and Internal Affairs approved a report on the liberalization of visas for holders of Serbian passports living in Kosovo.
