Israeli athletes to be under 24/7 protection at Olympics

Amid heightened security concerns, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that Israeli athletes will receive 24-hour protection during the Paris Olympics. This decision comes after left-wing politician Thomas Portes called for protests against Israel’s delegation, stating they were not welcome in France.

The controversy stems from Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, which has sparked accusations of antisemitism among some far-left groups in France. Despite this, Darmanin emphasized that Israeli athletes are welcome and their safety will be ensured during the Games.

Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne also expressed a warm welcome to the Israeli delegation, reaffirming France’s support for their participation in the Olympics. In light of the complex security issues surrounding Israeli athletes, a memorial ceremony for the 1972 Munich attack victims has been moved to the Israeli embassy.

The Games are set to kick off with a grand opening ceremony along the Seine, with optional participation from athletes. The controversy surrounding Israel’s delegation highlights the ongoing geopolitical tensions overshadowing this year’s Olympics.
